If you're a Subaru SUV aficionado, you may remember the seven-passenger Subaru Tribeca for its hallmark blend of hard-charging performance and family-friendly accommodations. Now, there's a new three-row, seven-to-eight-passenger SUV soon to take up the mantle, the new 2019 Subaru Ascent, and it looks to be an American orienteer's dream, built right here in the US and equipped to bring the long-hauling off-roader into the mix.

The word is out: the new Subaru SUV already seems to promise a whole new kind of large SUV experience. Surely, we'll see a few Subaru mainstays, like the highly durable new Subaru Global Platform. There'll be the celebrated turbocharged SUBARU BOXER engine, set to pair with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for balance and command of traction. We're even glad to see towering ground clearance, for which SUVs like the new Crosstrek, Subaru Forester, and the flagship Outback have become known. But, by way of recent news out of Subaru headquarters, we can count on more than a few elements to distinguish the new Ascent from what's become a busy and competitive segment, too.

For one, standard X-MODE® with Hill Descent Control for making the most of turning and pulling power over slick surfaces. Moreover, a maximum towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds when Ascent is properly equipped, along with standard raised roof rails, offers possibilities for taking plenty of cargo along for the ride. That's not to mention those of an available Class III trailer hitch and a full roster of optional Thule racking accessories. Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology will now come standard, too, offering intelligent help with everything from safe distancing to remaining in-lane to avoiding accidents. Of course, Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert will be available for situational awareness enhancement, too, alongside Reverse Automatic Braking to help evade rear obstacles.

Among other elements sure to capture attention is a trio of cameras for a near-panoptical view of your surroundings -- one located in an optional Smart Rear-View Mirror, one standard, a Rear-Vision Camera, and an available 180-degree front camera. Consider further optional features like LED Steering Responsive Headlights for visibility around corners, and there's almost no stretch of road or unbeaten path down which the new 2019 Ascent can't tack. Even our automaker's STARLINK Safety and Security services will see a new pair of functions for the model year -- Remote Engine Start and Climate Control right from a compatible smartphone and Plus Concierge services for help navigating, planning social activities, and scheduling auto service.

It'll all come together in a huge vacation-ready cabin sprawling up to 153.5 cubic feet, complete with seating options in cloth, durable spill-resistant cloth, and leather, available heated in front and optionally flanked by dual second-row captain's chairs. Factor in several SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia infotainment system options, available built-in, voice-activated navigation powered by TomTom, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available Wi-Fi connectivity for keeping in touch with civilization, and the trip takes off a world apart from the rest. All that'll be between you and adventure is the slide of an enormous optional 54-inch power tilting and sliding panoramic moonroof.

The new 2019 Subaru Ascent ought to be a sight to see when it finally launches and arrives here at Peninsula Subaru. Needless to say, we're excited.
